Zalando expands same-day delivery in Germany to ten new cities after successful tests

Major German fashion and shoe e-retailer Zalando has expanded its same-day delivery pilot project to ten more German cities after successfully testing the service in Cologne and Bonn since September 2015.

“As the first feedback has been very positive and we want to gain further experience, we have expanded the test to the following cities: Bochum, Bottrop, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Gladbeck, Herne, Mühlheim and Oberhausen,” Zalando said in its corporate blog.

With free delivery and returns being part of Zalando’s policy, the same-day service, operated by Liefery, is also being offered for free in the moment. It is not clear yet if the service will remain free in the long run.

Zalando explained how the same-day service works: “We are picking out random customers in the cities concerned who we surprise with an upgrade. They get a message around 4 pm that the goods they ordered will arrive the same day between 7-9 pm. That’s why we are closely cooperating with our partner Liefery, a start-up from Frankfurt.”

The retailer said that the products come from its nearby logistics centres in Brieselang and Mönchengladbach which makes such rapid delivery possible. “If the same-day delivery service is well received by our customers, we might firmly integrate it into the checkout process so our customers can actively choose it. How much delivery on the same day will cost has not been decided on yet.”

“Everything we do, every new idea starts with our customers and their desires. That’s why we continue testing new services and products to make the shopping experience with Zalando even more convenient,” the company concluded.
