GLS expands Spanish logistics network with new hubs in Valencia and Barcelona

GLS's Robarroja hub

GLS is continuing to expand its network in Spain with the recent opening of two new facilities in Valencia and Barcelona.

The facilities are a new international hub in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, about 20km from Barcelona city centre, and a national hub in Ribarroja, just outside Valencia.

Luis Doncel, General Manager Iberia of GLS, explained: "Both new locations are of great strategic importance for our company. They allow us to continue offering a high quality service to our national and international clients and to cater to the growth of package volumes."

Through the new hubs, capacity and efficiency in the two regions has significantly expanded. GLS is preparing for future growth in parcel volumes, doubling the capacity in the Barcelona area and increasing the size in Ribarroja by 70%.

The new hubs comply with GLS' high safety and risk prevention standards. This includes the installation of video surveillance cameras that record the entire route of the packages as they pass through.

In Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, the hub is located just 50 metres from the company’s old international centre. GLS has combined the operations of an international hub and a local branch with those of a regional hub. The new international centre has an operational area of around 9,000 sqm. The sorter belt has been expanded so that up to 8,000 packages can be processed per hour. The number of docks for loading and unloading long-distance transport trucks has also been increased to 32 and to 78 for delivery vans.

In Ribarroja, GLS Spain combined a branch office and the Levante regional hub in a single facility. The new regional hub covers an area of more than 5,700 sqm, exceeding the nearly 3,000 sqm of the previous installation. A modern automated belt allows processing of 4,000 packages per hour. The 24 docks for long-distance and delivery vehicles enable fast and safe loading and unloading of packages.
