DPD opens a new €14m distribution centre in Budapest

New DPD distribution centre in Budapest

DPD has opened a new HUF 5 billion (€14 million) distribution centre in Budapest to expand capacity in Hungary where it is growing at a double-digit rate.

The new 6,300 sqm facility, located on a 5.6 hectare site, can sort up to 11,250 packages per hour through a fully-automatic system supplied by Beumer Group.

The new opening is in line with DPD’s international CSR program, which not only offsets 100% of CO2 emissions but also significantly reduces them under an approved 5-year program. Maximum environmental considerations were taken into account during construction.

The most advanced, state-of-the-art, energy-saving mechanical and electrical equipment was installed in the interior, and significant planting took place in the vicinity of the building, with 70 deciduous trees being planted, creating a 20,000 sqm large green space.

Furthermore, an energy-saving, fully automatic parcel sorting system was installed in the hall with 58 docking gates. An important aspect in the selection of the technology was to keep the noise level and the environmental impact as low as possible.

Szabolcs Czifrik, Managing Director of DPD Hungária Kft., commented: “We are especially proud that, even in the critical situation caused by the coronavirus, we managed to complete the new logistics centre according to the original plans, by the set deadline.

“This facility provides the basis for the further development of the company, as we still expect dynamic, double-digit growth in the Hungarian parcel market. The increase in export volumes may, of course, depend on possible epidemiological measures, but at the same time we expect the previous, sometimes explosive growth in the consumer segment to continue.”

Czifrik added: “The new distribution system has not only doubled our sorting capacities, but is also fully automated, significantly reducing human involvement.”

Yves Delmas, DPDgroup’s European Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of GeoPost, described DPD Hungária as a fantastic success story. He emphasised that due to the extremely fast growth of the regional market and its role in transit traffic, it was important for DPDgroup, and the newly established distribution centre would strengthen the company's market position.
