Belgian postal operator Bpost has announced that a two-week strike over the reorganisation of delivery routes, which delayed hundreds of thousands of parcels, has come to an end with the post reaching a tentative agreement with unions.
The strike saw workers down tools last week in southern Belgium after the post and unions, including the socialist CGSP Poste union, failed to reach an agreement over the restructuring plans, with staff noting that they would impact working conditions.
The strike disrupted operations at distribution centers, transport services and sorting facilities on a rotating basis. Blockades were even put in place at sorting offices in Liège, Charleroi and Brussels. Earlier this week media reports revealed that approximately 800,000 parcels have been delayed as a result of the industrial action.
In a statement on its website, bpost noted: “Due to ongoing social unrest in Belgium, regional actions may temporarily impact our services. This could lead to delays in mail and parcel distribution or the temporary closure of some Post Offices.”
