The US Postal Service’s Postmaster General, Louis DeJoy, has resigned with immediate effect after nearly five years in what is considered one of the toughest roles in the postal sector.

Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino will now lead the USPS until a permanent successor has been found, the postal operator confirmed.

DeJoy announced his intention to retire from the Postmaster role in February this year, halfway through the postal service’s major 10-year Delivering for America transformation plan.

At the time, DeJoy told the USPS board of governors that while there remains much critical work to be done to ensure that the Postal Service can be financially viable, “it is important to have leadership in place whose tenure will span this future period.”

DeJoy has now revealed that yesterday (March 24) was his last day in the Postmaster role. In a statement, he outlined how the organisation is now well positioned to become “more efficient, capable, and competitive as it continuously changes and improves to best serve the American public.”
