A bipartisan group of Senators, supported by unions, has pushed back on the potential privatisation of the US Postal Service with a new resolution that calls on Congress to “take all appropriate measures” to ensure the post remains an independent establishment of the federal government.
Postal unions across the US are supporting the senators, urging every Congress representative to sign the resolution, and noting that it is vital that the USPS remains “a national treasure, providing invaluable services to the public.”
The resolution follows claims that Louis DeJoy, who left his role as Postmaster General last week, was pushed out by President Trump, clearing the way for privatisation. DeJoy announced his retirement earlier this year and had previously said he would stay in his role until a replacement had been found.
Now, Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino will lead the USPS until a permanent successor has been found, the postal operator confirmed. The postal service has appointed advisory firm Egon Zehnder to lead the search for the new Postmaster General.
