German CEP carriers cut emissions despite volume growth

Parcel and express carriers in Germany are successfully growing more sustainably by decoupling higher volumes from a significant reduction in emissions over the past eight years, according to a new study from industry association BPEX.

CEP operators have increased their combined volumes by a third (+35%) since 2016 but have also reduced emissions per shipment by 22% over the same period, the association's Sustainability Study 2025, which was released yesterday (April 9), found. This represents an average reduction of 3% per year.

Key factors

Important decarbonisation factors include lighter parcels, investments in electric vehicles and more sustainable operations, and expansion of alternative delivery concepts such as parcel lockers and parcel shops.

As a result, the CEP sector is well on the way to achieving the government’s transport industry target of a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, the German Parcel and Express Logistics Association (BPEX) stressed. Overall, BPEX member companies have set themselves the goal of operating in a climate-neutral manner by 2050.
