U.S. entrepreneur James E. Casey was formally inducted into the German Logistics Hall of Fame on November 30 as the inventor of modern consolidated parcel services. With $100 in starting capital, he established the American Messenger Company in 1907 in Seattle, which later became United Parcel Service.
During a gala dinner at the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Frank Sportolari, Managing Director UPS Germany, accepted the honorary certificate on behalf of UPS.
“This award is a great honor for UPS,” said Frank Sportolari. “The UPS of today, the one that moves 2% of the world’s GDP, that uses 3D printing, drones and alternative fuel vehicles, was all made possible thanks to the vision and persistence of Jim Casey. He was the one who brought UPS to Germany 40 years ago. Jim saw then the same potential we see in Europe today as we advance on our $2 billion European investment program. Jim left his mark on the history of parcel services and we are proudly continuing his legacy as he would have done, with the customer at the center of what is now a global integrated network.”
An international jury of experts voted Jim Casey and 12 other inductees into the Logistics Hall of Fame, honoring “Historic Milestones of Logistics” from 1490 to 2000. The initiative is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, as well as numerous trade associations.
