DHL Express Bulgaria opens new logistics center in Sofia

DHL Express opens new Sofia facility

DHL Express is expanding in South-East Europe with a new facility at Sofia Airport to increase its capacity in Bulgaria as volumes grow.

The Sofia Airport facility houses a hi-tech automatic system that has a sorting capacity of 3,000 pieces per hour. This will considerably increase the processing speed of both imports and exports. In addition, the new facility is equipped with the latest generation of streaming lines, bar code readers, automatic weight and size checking system, and X-ray machines delivering the highest level of security.

The new building spreads over an area of over 10,000 square meters and employs more than 300 employees. The project was implemented in response to growing volumes, according to the company.

Rumen Ivanov, DHL Express Bulgaria Managing Director, said: “We are investing in a major project that will significantly improve the logistics industry in Bulgaria. So far, there are such automated shipment systems in over 100 countries worldwide. Such systems have been in use for more than 10 years, and globally, the company has invested in over 40 projects in different countries. We are proud that we are the first to have an automated system in the country, and thus we have the potential to become one of the biggest distribution hubs for courier and cargo shipments in the region.”

The new logistics center, located just next to the airport’s Terminal 2, was opened in a ceremony attended by over 150 partners and customers. New fashion creations in DHL’s yellow and red colours made by Bulgarian fashion designer Anthony Langoutin, which had been unveiled at the recent Sofia Fashion Week, were also presented during the event.

DHL Express Bulgaria also pointed out that it has made significant investments in its regional network. In less than three years the offices in Plovdiv, Bourgas, Montana and Veliko Tarnovo have been completely renovated.
