The head of the United States Postal Service (USPS), Louis DeJoy, is stepping down halfway through a major restructuring program and just a few weeks after Donald Trump re-entered the White House.
The timing of the US Postmaster General’s resignation, which was announced Tuesday (February 18), so soon into Trump’s return has led to speculation about the role of the new president in his departure.
Privatization plan?
Trump is thought to be considering privatizing USPS, which has been operating at heavy losses for many years now. In a bid to stem those losses, which amount to more than $100 billion since 2007, DeJoy initiated an ambitious 10-year restructuring plan called Delivering for America shortly after taking charge of USPS.
