DHL Group cuts 8,000 jobs in Germany

DHL Group will dispose of 8,000 jobs at its large German mail and parcels business this year under a new €1 billion group-wide cost reduction programme that follows mixed results in a challenging 2024.

CEO Tobias Meyer told journalists, including CEP-Research, at today’s 2024 results press conference that the main reason for the workforce downsizing is the long-term structural decline in mail volumes but also cost and regulatory pressures.

He stressed that the downsizing represents only about 4% of Post & Parcel Germany’s workforce and will be carried out in a socially responsible manner. Most of the job reductions are expected to come through natural fluctuation with non-replacement of staff who retire or move to another employer.

CFO Melanie Kreis reminded journalists that Post & Parcel Germany needs to generate annual profits of at least €1 billion in order to finance its investments in its business transformation from mail to parcels and in sustainability measures. But the division is not expected to contribute to the group’s overall profits which are generated by the DHL divisions.
