Corinna Refsgaard, Chief Human Resources Officer at logistics giant GXO, discusses AI and robotics in logistics in this interview for CEP-Research.

The interview follows her presentation at the recent Leaders in Logistics Summit in Berlin.

CEP-Research: How are you seeing AI and new technologies transforming the way we work in logistics?

Refsgaard: AI is bringing technology to a new era. It helps synthesize data at speed and scale continually learning and adjusting to make technology even more powerful. Both combined are revolutionizing logistics by automating processes, optimizing supply chains, and improving customer experiences. AI-driven tools enable better demand forecasting, which can reduce inventory levels by 20-30%, while identifying additional capacity in warehouses, improving efficiency.

These technological advancements are reshaping the logistics landscape, driving efficiency and unlocking new value creation opportunities. Crucially, AI and automation also alleviate mundane office tasks, allowing employees to focus on strategic and creative work. This leads to a more engaged and productive workforce, enhancing job satisfaction – and consequently employee retention and performance.

However, the success of these technologies depends not only on their implementation but also on building a culture that supports and empowers employees. When people feel equipped with the right skills and support, they can fully embrace these transformations.

How can companies build trust within their workforce when it comes to the rollout of technologies such as AI?

Building trust within the workforce when rolling out AI requires several key approaches. First, companies must invest in upskilling and training to ensure employees feel confident working alongside new technologies. Clear, transparent communication is also essential. Leaders should listen to employee concerns, explain the reasons behind the changes, and show how AI can enhance their roles and enable people to focus on more complex and value-added activities

Leaders should also incentivize continuous learning and adaptability, rewarding employees who embrace technological changes. A supportive culture, built on curiosity, agility, and collaboration, helps foster trust and ensures employees feel valued throughout the transformation process.

How does people’s engagement impact business outcomes?

Employee engagement has a direct and significant impact on business outcomes. Engaged employees are more motivated, productive, and committed, which leads to higher performance and better results. They take ownership of their work, are proactive problem-solvers, and often go above and beyond, driving efficiency and innovation within the company.

A positive work culture, fueled by engagement, improves collaboration and morale, which in turn strengthens teams and reduces turnover. Engaged employees provide better customer service, leading to stronger customer relationships and increased satisfaction. In the long run, higher engagement contributes to better retention, productivity, and customer loyalty, all of which fuel business growth.

How can culture by design help us thrive in today’s dynamic environment?

Culture by design is essential for thriving in today’s dynamic business environment. When culture is intentionally shaped, it aligns values, behaviors, and practices with strategic goals and the fast-evolving market. A well-designed culture fosters adaptability, collaboration, and continuous learning, enabling the organization to navigate uncertainty and embrace change.

Creating a culture of innovation, agility, and resilience empowers employees to respond proactively to challenges and seize new opportunities. Furthermore, a culture focused on trust and inclusivity enhances engagement and retention, ensuring that teams remain aligned and committed to the company’s success. In today’s environment, where technology and market demands are constantly shifting, a culture that supports growth and transformation can make the difference between thriving and falling behind.

By designing culture intentionally, organizations ensure that technology isn’t just adopted but fully integrated into everyday operations, with employees as a driving force bringing it to life. Culture becomes a strategic asset that helps companies keep people in the center to stay ahead in a competitive landscape.
