Correos invests in parcel lockers and new vans

Spanish postal operator Correos is expanding its e-commerce services by rapidly rolling out more parcel lockers across the country and investing in a new fleet of vans.

Correos now has a network of 4,278 differently-sized CityPaq terminals and collection boxes in major cities across Spain. Most lockers are located in Madrid, where there are over 1,000 self-service points, followed by Barcelona, Málaga, Seville and Alicante.

The postal operator delivers parcels on a daily basis to the lockers for collection by recipients at a time of their convenience. The lockers are located in diverse public places such as train stations and car parks, in shopping centres, outside post offices and at retail outlets such as petrol stations and supermarkets.

Spanish consumers can sign up for the CityPaq service under www.citypaq.es or through the app, and select their preferred locker location for deliveries. The website also lists e-retailers that offer deliveries to a locker.

They can track their package through the app and check its status. When the parcel is placed into the locker, the postal operator sends the recipient by e-mail or SMS a code to open the locker. Users can also return parcels through the CityPaq terminals.

Separately, Correos yesterday announced it will renew its fleet with the purchase of more than 400 new vehicles from Renault to increase capacity for greater volumes of larger shipments requiring final-mile deliveries.

The postal operator will invest just over €4.9 million in 404 Renault Kangoo vans, which are due to be delivered to branches across Spain in the first half of December. The vans have a payload capacity of 600 kg to 750 kg.

Overall, the Correos fleet consists of more than 13,000 delivery vehicles (trucks, vans and motorbikes).
